Introduction & utilization of donation
With the support of the Helidoni Foundation, Paths of Greece is implementing a visibility and accessibility initiative for the “Greek Islands Trail,” an ambitious long-distance hiking route connecting islands across the Cyclades.
The project focuses on the installation of high-quality informational signage at central and highly visible locations across seven Cycladic islands between May and October 2026. Designed to improve orientation, accessibility and visitor experience, the initiative strengthens the identity of the Greek Islands Trail as an emerging international hiking destination while promoting sustainable tourism practices in the Aegean.
The signs will feature detailed maps of the trail network on each island, practical information for hikers and acknowledgments of local stakeholders and supporting partners. Manufactured using durable High Pressure Laminate (HPL) materials specifically designed to withstand the demanding Aegean climate, the infrastructure ensures long-term usability with minimal maintenance requirements.
Beyond the physical installation of signage, the initiative also includes a series of local community hiking events organized on each island to celebrate the launch of the new trail infrastructure. These events will engage residents and visitors alike, raising awareness around the value of hiking tourism, environmental stewardship and the preservation of cultural landscapes.
The grant supports the full implementation of the project, including map processing and graphic design, production and installation of the signs, coordination with municipal authorities, communication and outreach activities, as well as the organization of the community hiking events. Through social media campaigns, newsletters and local press engagement, the project will further increase the visibility of the Greek Islands Trail both nationally and internationally.
At a broader level, the initiative contributes to the long-term development of sustainable tourism infrastructure in the Cyclades while encouraging stronger local ownership of the trail networks. By involving municipalities and local communities in the implementation process, the project fosters a sense of shared responsibility for the preservation and promotion of the trails.
The installation of the seven signs also represents an important first step toward the broader expansion of the Greek Islands Trail across the Aegean. Combined with digital integration tools such as QR codes linking to online maps and trail resources, the project lays the foundation for the creation of one of Europe’s most recognizable long-distance island hiking routes, positioning Greece as a leading destination for sustainable outdoor travel.
